Anxiety and Me.

Anxiety—a formidable force that can disrupt our lives and leave us feeling uneasy. But what exactly is anxiety? It’s a complex emotional state characterized by feelings of worry, fear, and apprehension. It can manifest as racing thoughts, physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath, and an overwhelming sense of dread. Anxiety is not just a passing feeling of nervousness; for many, it’s a chronic condition that can significantly impact daily functioning. Understanding anxiety is the first step towards managing it. In this enlightening journey, we’ll unravel the intricacies of anxiety, exploring its origins, symptoms, and the various ways it can manifest in our lives.

1. Center Yourself:

Amidst the whirlwind of anxiety, finding your center becomes an invaluable skill. Centering oneself, or grounding, offers a treasure trove of techniques to unlock a state of serene focus. One mighty approach involves the art of deliberate, measured breathing. By devoting a mere 60 seconds to the deliberate act of inhaling and exhaling, you can guide your mind and body into a soothing oasis of relaxation.

Another method that can be useful in achieving a state of centering is to engage in a brief, physical sensation. Picture this: a gentle pinch, a tactile reminder to embrace the present moment and forge an unbreakable connection to the now.

Finally, identify and focus on specific objects or colors within one’s surroundings. Embrace the quest for three captivating items of a chosen hue, like the vibrant warmth and safety radiating from the sun-kissed color yellow. As you focus your attention on these visual anchors, a newfound stability and tranquility will gracefully wash over your mind. Finding your center is a personal journey, and the key is to discover the techniques that resonate with your soul.

2. Listen:

Get ready to embrace the art of active listening and give those anxiety-inducing thoughts the attention they crave. It’s time to grant yourself permission to express and explore these thoughts, allowing them to bask in the spotlight. But hold on tight, for we must remember that not all thoughts are created equal. Some may veer towards the realm of exaggeration or irrationality, dancing away from the realms of reality.

Fear not, for there is a secret weapon in your arsenal: the power of challenging and reframing these thoughts. Take a moment to question their validity, inviting alternative explanations to take center stage. Now, it’s time to engage in some friendly self-talk. Embrace a supportive and positive dialogue, especially when those sneaky thoughts of potential termination come knocking at your mental door. Reflect on past triumphs and unravel a multitude of reasons behind that meeting request.

Furthermore, dear readers, these thoughts are fleeting visitors, not permanent residents in your mind. The journey of anxiety management is an ever-evolving one, where a diverse repertoire of techniques is your passport to serenity. So, tune in, lend an attentive ear, and embark on the transformative quest of embracing your thoughts while maintaining a firm grip on reality.

3. Talk to someone:

We encourage you to not sit and stew in your thoughts, reach out to friends, family members, and professionals for help. This can help you recognize your triggers and find your own healing safe spaces (places I go when I can’t escape my thoughts). One of my common triggers is overstimulation. Being in large groups causes me to experience panic, shut down, and search for an escape. I try to steer clear of these triggers as much as possible, however, it’s not always possible to do so. This is where communication comes into effect. I know that I can tell my friends, family, or partner what’s going on and that they will always support and help me through it.

By sharing your own experiences and triggers with trusted companions, you not only gain valuable insights into your patterns but also create safe havens for healing. Remember, what works for one may not work for all, but together we can learn, support, and grow. I invite you to share your triumphs over anxiety and the techniques that have brought you solace in the comments section below. Let’s embark on this collective journey of resilience and understanding.
